HIGHER CALL

"As long as you both shall live."

Most of my mind is consumed by the task before me. I have by necessity never before repaired the Enterprise's warp engines in this way, and I shall not survive it. I must succeed to prevent the crew perishing as well.

I do not mind. It is a moment I have been prepared for since first becoming a Starfleet officer. The call of duty can summon us at any time.

But those words... I think of them, and hope that Jim knows they are not true.

I will love him... beyond my death.
