Are Kirk and Spock Screwing?I'd like to present this essay concerning the suggestion that Kirk and Spock might be screwing each other. First of all, the idea that these two would exploit each other in any way is inconsistent with the canon friendship portrayed in the show or the movies. They are frequently shown sacrificing their own well-being or safety for the other one's welfare, or even their lives, as in the case of Wrath of Khan. Neither would ever put selfish needs ahead of their relationship. And their friendship serves them well, and lasts for decades until the twilight of their lives. Secondly, a Vulcan would most likely find illicit sexual contact illogical. One-night stands and other varieties of chance affairs are undesirable to a race that is both spiritual and unemotional, where the mental closeness of a link probably supercedes any physical sexual drives outside of pon farr. Kirk experiences these kinds of encounters frequently with many alien females, which would probably be distasteful to an individual as private as Spock. He has, in fact, turned down such advances before, for example with the lovelorn Nurse Chapel ("Naked Time"). Thirdly, homosexuality was never depicted overtly in the television programs of the late sixties. Censorship reflected the tenor of the times in that same-sex relationships were an unspeakable topic in many environments. The uproar over the interracial kiss between Kirk and Lt. Uhura demonstrates all too well the kind of uncontroversial programming that most viewers were expecting. Imagine how much worse the reaction could have been if the show's two male co-stars had been the ones kissing instead. Clearly, Kirk and Spock have too much mutual respect and affection to treat their relationship so lightly. They never display the kind of shallow nonchalance toward each other that often leaves a female guest-star pining at the end of an episode. Their partnership is emotionally satisfying and superior to those cameo dalliances in many ways, the most obvious of which, of course, being permanence. So therefore I conclude that Kirk and Spock are not screwing each other ~~ they are making love. And, they are married.
